About FSMEI
OUR STORY
Freedom Soul Media Education Initiatives is a revolutionary consultancy firm which works to transform the world of education. FSMEI was founded by Tyson Amir: freedom fighter, educator, emcee, poet and author of Black Boy Poems and the Black Boy Poems Curriculum.
The foundations of FSMEI were laid during Tyson’s upbringing: growing up in the Bay Area, he witnessed both the problems with the standard public school curriculum, as well as alternative forms of education that sought to disrupt the standard. His weekends were spent attending Black School, where he participated in a cohort of Black students that were taught Black History by educators from their own community. He also attended the Jose Valdes Summer Math Institute for Black and brown students, whose graduates became the highest ranking math and science students at their schools. Raised by parents who were both deeply involved in Black radical politics, Tyson saw how the quality of the curriculum and teachers could drastically impact learning outcomes for all students, especially students of color.
These experiences culminated in the publication of Black Boy Poems in 2016. Inspired by Richard Wright’s Black Boy, Tyson knew that his book would serve as the basis for a broader project that would lead to a revolutionary change in education programming and curriculum. With this objective in mind, the publication of Black Boy Poems inaugurated a four-phase vision:
I. Publish Black Boy Poems and create video content for each poem in the book
II. Create the Black Boy Poems Curriculum and implement it in schools
III. Develop more educational content and resources for educators
IV. Expand the reach and impact of FSMEI
Seven years later, FSMEI has entered phase four: we’ve delivered more than 350 programs, served 30,000+ students, and partnered with 120+ schools to implement revolutionary educational programming.
